Whilst candidates are free to design their own research topics, the Association’s Technical Committee has suggested the following as a guide:

• An exploration of the environmental advantages associated with the use of slag products
• Road research surveys which look at the performances of various roads using slag materials
• Opportunities for slag in sub-base constituents
• Interlocking strength of concrete with slag aggregates
• The limits of iron content in cement powder, including an exploration of the net effects to increasing these limits above and below current specifications
• Skid resistances of slag aggregates in asphalt, compared to other materials available today, and a discussion on the differences between both
• Investigation of stripping resistance of asphalt containing steel furnace slag aggregates
• Monitoring of pavements of less than 150-175mm of asphalt cover
