The Concrete Institute of Australia’s Biennial National Conference, Concrete 2017 was held at the Adelaide Convention Centre, from 22nd October, 25th October, 2017.

Concrete 2017 will be the 28th Biennial National Conference of the Concrete Institute of Australia and will be held in the beautiful city of Adelaide, South Australia.  

The 13th Global Slag Conference and Exhibition will take place in Prague, the Czech Republic from 24 - 25 April 2018.

Established in 1971, the Awards for Excellence in Concrete recognise and publicise the many significant contributions to excellence in concrete design, construction and materials in Australia. Concrete related projects, technologies and innovations are all eligible to receive an award.

Research from the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in the USA shows the use of slag in pavements and roads is seen to reduce the heat island effect suffered by a lot of metropolitan areas, due to increasing the reflectivity of the finished pavement.

The World of Iron & Steel Slag 'network' (WoISS) aims to advance the international management and use of metallurgical slags in ways that are technically sound, economically beneficial and in an environmentally responsible manner.

Costing over $41M, slag was specified to meet the technically demanding requirements for this project.  Australian Steel Mill Services (ASMS) partnered with NSW Roads & Maritime Services (RMS) for an upgrade of Showground Road in Castle Hill.

As geopolymer concrete knowledge increases, so does its interest. The increasing amount of research, technical and commercial papers being produced and published supports this view. Geopolymer concrete is becoming more widely accepted within the industry and in turn, the promotion the reduced CO2 benefits that come from displacing emission from Portland Cement.

The ASA CEO Craig Heidrich was invited by JFE and the Vietnam Steel Association to visit Han Noi, Vietnam, to represent the Australasian (iron & steel) Slag Association at a Slag forum hosted by the Vietnam Steel Association.

The Australian Government’s $2.55 billion Emissions Reduction Fund provides opportunities for Australian business, farmers, landholders, local councils and others to earn carbon revenue and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

It was indeed tragic to hear through friends of the Association that Bill Bourke had recently passed away. Nick Jones, Harsco UK & Craig Heidrich, CEO of Australasian (iron & steel) Slag Association, pay tribute to the legacy Bill left within the association.

The CRCLCL participant’s annual forum was recently held on the 15^th November at the Australian National Maritime Museum in Sydney, with CEO of the Australasian (iron & steel) Slag Association, Craig Heidrich, giving a presentation in regards to progress on his research project.

Organised by Euroslag with the local support of AFOCO, The 9th European Slag Conference will take place in Metz, France from October 11th to 13th, 2017 and abstracts for presentations should be submitted by 10^th February

On Monday the 23rd of January, Harsco Corporation announced the signing of two multi-year contracts for steel mill services in China and Brazil, which are valued at more than $100 million.

The Australasian (iron & steel) Slag Association website is frequently visited by members, academics, researches and the general public. The website includes information ranging from products, to news, events and more. In 2017 the ASA website will be receiving a large update.

As the industry is very much aware, slag is a highly resourceful product. Hendrik G van Oss, a mineral commodity specialist for the U.S. minerals information center, agrees with this, rewarding iron and steel slag with the title of “Mineral Resource of the month” earlier this year while stating that iron and steel slags are co-products of iron and steelmaking, not waste products.
