Slag, a Diamond in the Rough
When we think about slag most of us imagine a rocky, rough, rugged material. But recently, some have polished this diamond in the rough and created something beautiful. Jamie North recently unveiled his latest work in Victoria and even more renently, a family in Riddells Creek, Victoria, have created an eco-friendly home which has polished e-crete slag on the floors.
It is believed to be Australia's first e-crete/slag floor. E-crete is created from slag and other by-products such as fly ash and silica flume. The e-crete uses 60% less carbon than conventional concrete (OPC). The eco-friendly house also features recycled railway sleepers, solar panners, a low emission wood heater and is valued at over $550,000.
